Upgraded Huawei Mate X 5G chipset that was spotted at IFA 2019
The core of the Huawei Mate 30 Pro and the folding Mate X will be a new improved 5G chipset, and was first seen in the halls of IFA 2019 this week.
The Kirin 990 chipset manufactured by Huawei appeared in a banner of the not-so-subtle convention center and was photographed by Twitter user Roland Quandt.
Huawei has an uncertain future due to Huawei's ban in the United States, but it is still advancing with new technologies, as evidenced by the Kirin 990 chipset. We previously learned about the Kirin 990 when Huawei confirmed that it would power the Mate X.

The sign indicates that the Kirin 990 chipset will have integrated 5G capabilities. This means that an external 5G modem will not be necessary in addition to the chipset. The chip is also based on a 7 nm FinFET Plus design that uses extreme ultraviolet lithography, for a dense and low-power design.
However, it has previously been speculated that Huawei's next flagship phones would get a Kirin 985 chipset. Now, this does not rule out that possibility. If Huawei chooses to offer only 5G and 4G-LTE variants of its next phones, it could use different chipsets for each.
As exciting as this news may be for Huawei fans looking at a future Huawei P40 or the upcoming and foldable Mate X, Huawei is not the only company that jumps to chipsets with integrated 5G capabilities.

Samsung has just announced the Exynos 980 chipset, which will also have a built-in 5G modem. And, it should be in mass production later this year and land on the Samsung Galaxy S11.
However, Huawei's Kirin 990 will likely appear on flagship grade devices. Therefore, it may be the most premium of chipsets. The Samsung Exynos 980 chipset seems to have specifications that will position it better in the heart of mid-range 5G phones.
However, Huawei will probably be the first in the market. The Mate 30 Pro is scheduled to launch on September 19, and it would be a bad thing for Huawei to promote its new chip before launching a phone built around anything but
