A Mobile Battery Charger, is a type of power supply called Switched Mode Power Supply. It provides a Constant Voltage (CV) and a Constant Current (CC) to the Battery, providing it with the energy required to charge it.
Generally, the Voltage is 5V DC, and the Current is 0.5 A or 1 A.
The way it works is, it takes the 220/110 V AC from the Wall Socket, Rectifies it and Converts it into DC Voltage, Filters it, and Passes it through a High Frequency (> than 20Khz normally) Semiconductor switch, generally a MOSFET or BJT.
This high frequency current is fed into a Transformer, which is considerably smaller than its Line Frequency Counterpart (50/60 Hz). This size is possible due to High frequency Switching. The Voltage on the secondary side of the Transformer is then rectified and Filtered and provided as an output. This Voltage is also fed to an Feedback network, which usually consists of an Opto Coupler to provide isolation between primary and secondary sides. This feedback adjusts the Duty Cycle of the Semiconductor Switch, which helps in regulating the Output.
