Samsung Collaboration with Kaiser
The home-based cardiac rehabilitation program experienced only 2 percent reading rates and saw a 74 percent improvement in absolute rates compared to clinic-based programs.
Samsung Electronics revealed the results of a joint cardiac rehabilitation initiative, developed in collaboration with Kaiser Permanente, the largest non-profit integrated health system in the US. Samsung and Kaiser Permanente collaborated to bring home-based cardiac rehabilitation solutions, demonstrating promising results for improved patient outcomes based on the results and descriptions published today in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) Catalyst.
The results of the program, the NEJM article, showed significant improvements over chronic, traditional cardiac rehabilitation programs. While the US national average hospitalization rate for these conditions is about 10–15 percent, patients attending the program experienced a reading rate of less than 2 percent. The program achieved an 87 percent patient completion rate, a 74 percent improvement over center-based rehabilitation programs.
"The program took a new, digital-first approach to cardiac rehabilitation and placed control in the hands of patients," said Peter Koo, corporate SVP and head of the health service team at the mobile communications business at Samsung Electronics. “This produced higher program completion rates than programs requiring excessive visits to the doctor’s office.
According to the NEJM article the Kaiser Permanente program enrolled more than 2,300 patients and over 80% of the program participants completed the program with a national average of less than 50% completion. Kaiser Permanente is now evaluating the program's expansion beyond Southern California.
The program clearly demonstrated the potential of digital healthcare. The solution has added commercially available Samsung's smartwatches with built-in optical sensors - Gear S3 and Galaxy Watch with Samsung's HeartWise 1 application to track each patient's daily heart rate and activities. A report of patients 'activities was logged directly on their physician's dashboard which was used to set exercise goals and monitor patients' progress.
“Our legacy in devices enables us to develop best-in-class hardware to deeply understand and address users’ needs. We are committed to providing comprehensive health, wellness and fitness solutions that provide users with a more personalized and practical experience. For this initiative, we took a human-centric design approach and began investigating the problem through the lens of our users, and then created a digital solution to meet the needs of our users, ”revealed Ku. "Bringing Wellness, Engineering and User Experience Minds together helped us address this problem with a new perspective, and created an innovative, secure and engaging user-centric solution."
