Yahoo outage hits thousands of email users
London (CNN Business) Yahoo services fell for more than seven hours on Thursday, which caused the anger of thousands of its email users.
Downdetector, a website that provides information about online interruptions, had received more than 5,000 reports of problems related to Yahoo Mail before 2 a.m. ET. Hundreds of users also reported problems with other Yahoo services, according to Downdetector.
The problem was resolved later in the day, but the company gave few details about the interruption.
"Most of the services are back online. This is a technical problem that affected our services," Yahoo tweeted from its official customer service account at 9.30 a.m.
Most of the complaints originated in Europe, with a strong concentration in the United Kingdom, but a Twitter user complained that Yahoo had also been inactive for hours in Australia. Several users complained on Twitter that "emails that were sent during the interruption" were missing "or
lost.
The Yahoo customer service website, help.yahoo.com, also stopped working for a while and showed the message "Thank you for your patience. Our engineers are working quickly to solve the problem."
In 2013, a data breach in Yahoo compromised the accounts of the 3 billion users it had at that time. Yahoo's parent company, Oath, a subsidiary of Verizon (VZ), did not provide details about the cause of Thursday's interruption, and only said it was "aware of a technical problem" that affected its services.
